Commemorative Book -80 Years of Club de Pesca

The Challenge:

Club de Pesca, one of Cartagena’s most emblematic marinas & yacht clubs, approached me on the occasion of its 80th anniversary. More than a private celebration, the milestone represented an opportunity to reposition the Club for newer generations and reaffirm its historic role in the city’s cultural and maritime identity. The Club needed a communications solution that would both honor its legacy and engage members, tourists, and the wider community.

The Solution:

I proposed and directed the creation of a commemorative coffee table book under the guiding concept “80 Years Weaving a Culture of the Sea.” This narrative framework allowed us to:

  • Tell a strategic story: Highlighting the Club’s impact on Cartagena through sport, sailing, and community life, while underscoring its stewardship of the nearly 500-year-old Pastelillo Fortress.

  • Engage visually and emotionally: Nautical knots and weaving motifs were used throughout the design to symbolize continuity, connection, and tradition, making the story resonate across generations.

  • Celebrate community: The book was designed to include as many members’ voices, images, and memories as possible, reinforcing a sense of belonging and legacy.

The Process:

As Editorial Director, I led the project end-to-end, ensuring the final product was both a communications asset and a piece of cultural heritage. My work included:

  • Research & Archival Work: Exploring Club archives, curating historical documents, and revisiting old publications.

  • Interviews & Oral Histories: Engaging with founding families and senior members to capture first-hand stories.

  • Content Development: Re-editing legacy texts, writing new narrative sections, and shaping the editorial voice.

  • Creative Direction: Leading design, photography, and illustration to align with the “weaving” concept.

  • Publishing Oversight: Managing the production process to deliver a high-quality book worthy of the anniversary.

The Impact:

The book became far more than a commemorative object. It positioned the Club as a guardian of Cartagena’s maritime heritage, strengthened member pride and engagement, and offered the city a cultural product that bridged past and future.
